Kusasi [View Gallery]

Meet Kusasi, an adult male orangutan from the southern part of Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). Other males clear the path when Kusasi comes around. He can be found at Camp Leakey Research center from time to time, as he is accustomed to being near people. He holds a claim that many human males would envy, he has met Julia Roberts and given her a hug. He has appeared on PBS's "In the Wild with Julia Roberts", and has also been seen on Oprah Winfrey's TV show.

Like all adult male orangutans, Kusasi spends the majority of his time alone, foraging for food. Primarily vegetarian, orangutans must spend most of the time looking for food to meet their daily caloric requirements.

The distinct cheek pads belong only to adult males. Females do not develop these structures, and are much smaller than their male counterparts. Females spend their time with their young, who depend on them until they are 8 to 10 years old. Although they don't seem to actively seek social interaction, females can be seen foraging together with other females and their young.

Young orangutans are entirely dependent on their mothers to learn how to survive in the jungle. They are very playful, and often get into things. Despite their behavior, their mothers seldom discipline them.

Wild orangutans are threatened with extinction. To learn more about hazards they face, visit the website of the Orangutan Foundation International. Our products are sold to benefit orangutans and other apes worldwide. Please take a look.
