The Great Apes Conference

An historical event took place July 3-6, 1998. The Third International Conference on the Great Apes of the World (GAWC-3) was held in Malaysia, home of the orangutan. On the island of Borneo, in the charming city of Kuching, people from around the world gathered to focus on the status of apes worldwide. The focus was securing the survival of the great apes into the next millennium. The conference was organized and hosted by the Orangutan Foundation International. Those attending included primate experts, authors, zoo keepers, teachers, and many others. At the end of the conference, a document was presented to Dr. James Masing, Minister of Tourism, Sarawak. It was presented by leaders of the Action Planning Committee for the Conference, following input from all the delegates to the conference. (click here to read the document).

The site of the conference held great charm, although the delegates were very busy and spent most of their time inside conference rooms of the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Dave got a chance to go out a little bit, and take some local photos. If you missed the conference, these are some of the sights Kuching had to offer.
